I’m addicted to electronics!

by Shaun Heidtman on Nov.08, 2009, under Uncategorized

Anyone who knows me knows that I have an unhealthy love of gadgets. If it is electronic, I probably want it. And even if I don’t want it, there’s a danger of me buying it anyway. I own junk that I’ve never even used. I bought a graphic tablet for my computer. I don’t draw…I don’t do graphic design. What the hell was I thinking? I’ve had it for like 6 months, and haven’t even had it hooked up to the computer in about 5 months and 28 days.

That said, I want an e book reader. I don’t read books much. I read the occasional book. But the Kindle is currently at $259. And yes, you get books cheaper when you buy the electronic versions. But it would take me like 2 years to buy enough books to save enough on the cost of books to justify the cost. But it’s an electronic gadget! I MUST HAVE IT! Anyone have a Kindle they want to sell me?

I just wanted to share that with everyone. You can go back to your regularly scheduled lives now.

I’m now a half marathon finisher…make a note

by Shaun Heidtman on Oct.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

Well, it came and it went. I came, I saw, and I conquered…at a medium pace. The official time was 3:18:04. The training for 5 months finally came to fruition and I did what so many people thought 5 months ago would never happen. I finished 13.1 miles. I just thought I would detail the race from my perspective for those who may be interested (if anyone out there is actually interested).

Our group was meeting at 5:45am. Considering we (me and Stef) weren’t the slightest bit tired as of 11:30pm the night before, we knew it was gonna be a rough morning. But when we both woke up around 3:30am, and couldn’t go back to sleep, we actually weren’t too bad. 3 1/2 hours is enough sleep to run a marathon on…right? (Actually, they say the sleep you get the night before is WAY more important.) But we got up, had a couple of bagels with peanut butter, and on we went. By the time we got to the start line, it was around 6:30, and incredibly cold. Even in sweatshirts and fleece pants, we were moving around a lot, trying to keep warm. Finally around 6:50, we ditched the warm clothes, and headed for our spot in the starting grid.

Standing there surrounded by thousands of people (there were just under 20,000 participants), I started to get really excited. This started as a way to honor my mother’s memory, and raise some money for a great cause. But standing there at that start line, it became something for me too. I was about to do something that really, not a lot of people ever do. By the time we finally got to go (7:30ish), I wasn’t even cold anymore…I was just ready. Stef was still freezing.

The first couple of miles, we just coasted. It was funny to watch people shed articles of clothing like they were on fire. There were sweatshirts and jackets and gloves everywhere. It looked like a disaster movie, and we were all running away from a horde of zombies or something. Fun fact, the Salvation Army follows everyone, and scoops up the discarded clothing as donations. The first set of portapotties had a huge line, which was funny. Then it was across the Ambassador Bridge. It was cool to run across the bridge, and see the view.

The run through Canada was pretty much uneventful. We had to get to the tunnel by the 2 1/2 hour mark, and we made it there easily. The run through the tunnel was a really cool thing. Only marathon in the world with an underwater mile. We came out of the tunnel, and were feeling pretty good. We had done a really good job of pacing ourselves up to that point.

Then a bit later, around mile marker 10, we hit the wall. We tried to shift back to running, and our legs just couldn’t take any more. My left knee felt like someone had just hit it with a sledgehammer, both of my feet were aching. So we just hobbled on, knowing that we were getting close.

When we neared the final corner, we had a dilemma. About 6 miles prior, we agreed that we were going to end the race running. Now here we were, about to turn onto the quarter mile straight to the finish, and we were having a hard enough time walking. But we didn’t come this far just to limp home. We turned the final corner, and took off. The second I started running, my knee felt like it was going to give. But there were literally a thousand people (probably more) in that final stretch just screaming at us to cheer us on. A few of them were probably looking at me a little funny, because I was literally screaming in agony between all the various pains in my legs. But I finished. And before the race, we were told that when you cross the finish line, smile. Well, I was 50% on that one. Cause Team In Training had someone with a camera right before the finish line, and I’m pretty sure when they post that picture, I’m gonna look like I’m dying. But when I crossed the finish line, I was smiling. Well, I think I was smiling. I tried. I’m waiting for the marathon to post their official pictures.

So when all was said and done, we ran about 8 of the 13.1 miles. For our first marathon, I consider that a HUGE success. 5 months ago, I couldn’t run a mile. Yeah, that’s how awful I was. I’ve lost 30lbs and counting. Although, with the way we’ve eaten in the last 24 hours or so after the race, I might be up a pound or two.

After the race, when I finally got a chance to sit down…I don’t think sitting down has ever felt that good in my life. Of course, getting up…not so much. We limped back to the hotel, and crashed. And of course this morning, things were even worse. Both my feet hurt so much I can barely put any weight on them. My left ankle hurts. My left knee doesn’t like bending right now. My back is so sore, it’s hard to lift my arms. My abs even hurt.

And I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Every painful step I take today is a reminder of the battle I fought yesterday. The battle I fought for my mom. The battle I fought for me.

I would recommend this experience to anyone. We raised money for an absolutely amazing cause. In fact, my only regret was that we weren’t a little more involved in the Team In Training experience. We didn’t go to a lot of meetings. We were busy this summer. Maybe we should have made a little more time. They’re a great group of people. And the accomplishment you feel afterward…I see it as a life changing experience. And as an added bonus, if you’re a single guy, I saw a lot of good looking ladies at team functions.

Of course, I would never trade them for my good looking lady. This marathon was something that meant a lot to me, and Stef was there with me every step of the way. She has never run 20 feet in her life, and she agreed to do this with me. It wasn’t her mother. As far as I know, she’s never lost anyone to a blood cancer. But she was there with me, fighting the fight with me. And we did it together, and it brought us closer. She’s my hero.

And after all this…and not being able to walk the next day…you think I’m done? Nope. We signed up this morning for the Green Bay Marathon on May 17, 2010. And you better believe I’m going to blow away 3:18:04. Plus, the race ends on Lambeau Field. How effing cool is that!?

Well kids, that’s all for this time. I’m off to have some lunch then we have massages booked. Hopefully I can hobble a littler faster after a 90 minute massage.

Can’t sleep…must rule the undead…

by Shaun Heidtman on Oct.16, 2009, under Uncategorized

Who needs to sleep? Not me apparently.

Hey, wait a second…Shaun is blogging again!? This can’t be right.

Marathon is in a little more than 48 hours. That’s scary. The marathon represents a lot to me…I’ve done all this work to raise money for Leukemia research. Research that, if it had been around 25 years ago, could have maybe saved my mother. Which means that she’ll be with me for every step of this marathon. And this is the biggest physical (and possibly mental) challenge I have taken on in my life. I’m cautiously looking forward to it though. It should be interesting to see how I do. I don’t care what happens though, I will finish all 13.1 miles of it. I will leave absolutely nothing on the table on Sunday.

On a lighter note, I’m currently trying to find a Halloween costume. I don’t typically do Halloween, but I have several friends having parties this year, so I need to actually come up with something. And Stef got a costume, so now I’m under even more pressure to find something. I wonder where the whole costume thing started. And furthermore, I wonder at what point it morphed into an excuse to be dressed as slutty as humanly possible. Not that I’m complaining about the parade of skin, just wonder where it started. Maybe I should just shut up and enjoy it.

And in current event news…who the hell decides to make their own hot air balloon? (In case you missed it, some jackass in Colorado decided to make his own hot air balloon, then it took off into the air. They thought their 4 year old son was in it, so they chased it for miles. Turns out, the kid was in the attic the whole time.) Seriously? Of all the things you could make, a hot air balloon was what came to mind? Maybe you should just stick to something suited more to your intelligence level…like building a scale replica of the Washington Monument out of popsicle sticks. You’re damn lucky your son wasn’t in that balloon. Maybe we should let him build a hot air balloon, and make you ride in it, see how that works out for you.

Alright kids. I finally feel sleepy, so I’m gonna go dream about sex reading books.

Hey 2009!

by Shaun Heidtman on Oct.08, 2009, under Uncategorized

Earlier this year, I set out to achieve some things. I made a list shortly after the beginning of the year (I refused to call the items on said list “resolutions,” as I find New Years Resolutions to be silly) of all the items I wanted to accomplish. I recently looked back on that last to find out that I had actually been somewhat successful in accomplishing that list, which made me happy. Sure, there were things I haven’t done yet, but then again, there are 2 months left.

Here’s some of the more notable ones that I’ve managed so far:

- Get back on stage and do stand up again. This one I have passed with flying colors. My second venture into the world of comedy was the original inspiration for this blog, and will hopefully again soon become it’s motivation. Stand up has progressed nicely, and I am enjoying it. I would also like to think that I’m getting better at it, but that’s more for you to be the judge of.

- Run a 5k (While I haven’t entered a formal 5k, I have run that distance (and more) in a single training session while preparing for the marathon.)

- Lose 50 pounds. It’s funny, when I tell people that I’m trying to lose weight, and then tell them the number that I’m trying to lose, they are shocked. They can’t believe I had that much to lose. Maybe I carried that extra weight well, but maybe they were just trying to be nice. Regardless, I knew I wanted the lose the weight. I didn’t start out the year doing all that great with the weight loss, but I’m pleased with my progress over the last couple of months. I’m pleased to say that I am down 30lbs, and continuing to lose. Maybe I can even get those last 20lbs off before the end of the year (and before the holiday eating fest starts).

It’s funny…I had forgotten about my list until recently. And yet I still managed to accomplish a pretty good amount of it. I guess the things on the list were actually important to me. Will I make a list for 2010? Hmmmm, I guess I never know what I’ll write. I’ve written things that will probably never see the day of light…and rightly so. I’m not even sure what inspired me to write them. Guess I just like writing. Guess that’s why I have a blog.

And on that note, I hear it’s snack time in the living room. Don’t worry, it’s a healthy snack. Popcorn with no butter…just what every boy dreams about.

Until next time… (which I swear will be this month!)

Yeah, I’m back.

by Shaun Heidtman on Aug.03, 2009, under Uncategorized

Ok folks, we’re back up and running…kind of.  I’m running non stop it feels like.  But, things are going well.  Here’s a rundown of what’s happened since we last talked:

- Marathon Training

We’re now training 4 times a week.  And that sucks.  My legs hurt.  Someone help.  Please?

- Moving

We’re all moved in.  I love the new apartment.  And it’s a pleasant surprise to live with a girl that I actually like.  And it’s nice to live by work.  But the neighbors kinda smell.  Seriously, every day in the hallway it’s a new smell.  And they’re rarely good.

- Stand up

Been trying to find stage time whenever I can.  Been getting stronger with my performances, although I’ll be the first to admit, I have a long way to go.  But, I’m feeling more inspired then I ever have.  Got some time at Comedy Castle last Wednesday.  It has been a long time since I was there last.  It was good to be back there, for sure.  And now, things are heading full speed ahead to the August 18th show at Joey’s.  If you’re reading this, then you should totally be at the show.   It’s a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (oh yeah, that’s what we’re doing the marathon for, how ironic!) and we’re trying to get as many people as we can.  I’ve got some really funny guys lined up, and I’ll be trying to hold my own with them.  So, if you’ve never seen me do stand up, or if you’ve seen me a million times, come out, because this will be a really fun show.  I have the tickets, so let me know if you’re coming.

Yes, I know this is lame…who really just wants to read me babble about my life?  I know, I know.  But let me get back into the swing of things.  I’m working on a million things right now, and I’m hoping to actually finish some of them.  Hopefully come fall I’ll be talking about more stuff than just my stand up.  For now, this is all you get.  I’ll get back to writing more now, I promise.  And it’ll be wittier than this, I promise.

Oops!

by Shaun Heidtman on Jul.06, 2009, under Uncategorized

Someone kicked the internet box, and the blog went down.  We had a fatal error, and lost some info.  But we’re back up and running, and ready to go.  Lots of cool stuff happening lately, been amazingly busy.

Right now, I’m preparing to head to Midland, MI for a wedding this weekend, and then I have a contest date at Joey’s on the 13th.  So I’ll update everyone after the show next Tuesday…hopefully with some good news!

Ciao!
